Usually calm, cool and collected it can be difficult to tell when something is upsetting your cat. However, just like humans, there are things that can annoy cats.
NuVet took a look at a few of the big ones, which you might find surprising. Keep reading to learn more.
1. Dirty Litter Box
If there is one thing Fluffy can’t stand, it is a dirty litter box. Your cat will let you know that she is unhappy about a messy litter box by leaving deposits elsewhere, and usually in places that are quite upsetting.
If you find gifts from Fluffy on your expensive carpet, couch or even on your bed, it is time to change her litter box. One way to prevent this from happening is to designate a time every day where you clean the litter box out. Also, it is generally a good idea to have two litter boxes for every cat.
2. Being Looked in The Eye
Cats have really pretty eyes, so you might find it hard not to be drawn to them or want to look into them. However, cats are not really big fans of prolonged eye contact.
For a cat, looking into their eyes may be perceived as a threat or challenge, which is why many cats will look away or stay away if they find you looking at them. So the next time you get up close to your kitty, try not to stare at her eyes. Chances are, she does not like it.
3. Too Much Petting
Believe it or not – most cats do not like excessive or prolonged petting. In fact, many cats have a threshold for how much they want to be touched and can become over stimulated. Fluffy can even become aggressive after too much petting, which is called petting induced aggression.
The good news is that your cat will usually give you some signs that they have had enough. They may tense up, walk away or hiss. Sometimes petting a cat in one spot for too long, like between their ears for example, can become uncomfortable.
You can figure out what may be too much for Fluffy by trial and error. Count the number of times you pet your cat before you notice a shift in their mood. This will help you determine approximately where their threshold is.
4. Car Trips
Like a lot of cat parents, you have probably noticed how little your fuzzy feline enjoys car rides. Cats like routine and they like to be in control, which often times a ride in the car disrupts.
Cats are also prone to motion sickness, which is another big reason your kitty probably does not like the car. Motion sickness also applies to plane and boat trips as well, which is something to keep in mind during your next family trip.
