So you consider yourself a lover of big dogs and for whatever reason, the idea of bringing a small dog into your life has never been appealing to you but you have asked yourself from time to time why small dogs are such a popular choice for so many individuals and families. Here’s what makes little dogs such great companions and excellent additions to the household. Keep reading to learn more.
They are less expensive to care for
Because of their size, little dogs require much less than larger dogs. They eat much less, which means your dog food budget goes farther and they need smaller quantities of other supplies like treats and grooming materials.
They are great for apartment living
If your living space is limited this doesn’t mean that your companionship has to be. Little dogs are great for those of us who live in apartments or other smaller dwellings. They take up barely any room so finding a space for Fido’s doggie bed won’t be difficult.
They may live longer
On average, smaller dogs are known to live longer. This is due in part to the fact that smaller dogs mature more slowly than larger dogs. It is not uncommon for smaller dogs to live up to 20 years.
They are easier to travel with
One of the great bonuses of smaller dogs is how easy it is to travel with them. They fit more comfortably in your car, even while in a carrying case or crate. They are easier to bring on plane trips too and sometimes may be allowed to stay with you in the cabin of the plane. You can carry them in your arms much easier than larger dogs (don’t tell large dogs that). Many hotel chains are also willing to accept guests with small dogs, which makes going on vacations much easier because you don’t have to board your pooch.
Easier to care for
Generally, unlike their larger counterparts, smaller dogs simply require a lot less. This means they get a lot out of shorter walks. Giving Fido a bath is much easier and sometimes not as messy. They poop a lot less than larger dogs, which means cleaning up after them is less of a hassle too!
They are just as big on love as larger dogs
Don’t let their small size fool you. Little dogs have just as much love to give as big dogs and are really great at giving it! There is a reason many small dogs are called lap dogs. They are great at snuggling and providing excellent company.
So the next time you decide to welcome a new four-legged companion into your heart and home, don’t let the length of the pup’s legs be a determining factor. You just might find that you are perfectly suited for a smaller dog.
