If you own a cat, you know how they can be loving and offer great companionship. You also know that they can be creatures of habit. Most have their routines as well as likes and dislikes and preferences. The same can go when it comes to your cat’s litter box. Most cat’s fall into a pattern and prefer that it stays that way. If things aren’t quite set up to your kitty’s liking, they may avoid using the litter box completely. There are a few things you can do that may help keep your cat happily using the litter box.
Choose a Litter and Stick with It
It can be overwhelming to select the appropriate litter for your cat. There’s so many out on the market. Some older cats may have a preference by the time you welcome them into your home so asking ahead may work best. However, choose a litter that you find accommodates your cat’s needs as well as your home. Make sure what you choose is best for your cat’s needs as well as safe for your cat; especially if your feline is known to ingest any litter by accident.
Keep Litter Box in Same Location
Cats can be creatures of habit and the location of their litter box is a prime example of this. Find a place that is convenient for your family and your cat and stick with it. A cat may be more prone to use the bathroom elsewhere if the usual location of the litter box has been changed. Privacy in this location should also be considered since most cats prefer a little alone time while using the litter box.
Changing Litter
Another reason some felines may refuse to use their litter box is because you have changed the type of cat litter. Again, cats typically are comforted by what they have known and will be less likely to use the litter box if a sudden change of litter has occurred.
Keep Litter Box Clean
The litter box is your cat’s rest room and should be kept clean. If you slip up and forget, you may notice your cat avoiding it. Taking care and paying close attention to the cleanliness of your cat’s litter box can go a long way with your pet.
